The beginning of the development of powder metallurgy in Belarus was the creation of a special laboratory headed by Professor Oleg V. Roman on public principles at the Department of Metals Technology of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute in 1957. In 1959, a basic laboratory of powder metallurgy BPI was created at "Udarnik" plant; it was transformed into a sectoral scientific research laboratory in 1963 and into a problem lab in 1965. Scientific Research Institute of powder metallurgy was established on the basis of this laboratory in 1972 by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR №272 dated 09/07/72.
